To borrow from wine tasting lingo, I'd call it a Chocolate Bomb. We've tried Red Emperor, Golden Monkey, others.. - here you open the bag, and chocolate smell hits you in the nose! It stays when you brew the tea, and you feel the chocolate taste when you drink it. This tea is also very striking visually, very beautiful abundant tips. Since we've grown up accustomed to Assams, this kind of tea to me is more of a curiosity item, but I look forward to entertaining my guests with it!.. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: Joel , Berry , Irvington ,NY April 26, 2008 This is a magnificent black tea, among the top China Black tea's I have had. The dry leaf is beautiful, many downy golden tips. The liquor is complex but smooth, not too astringent, a bit sweet, and a perfectly balanced structure. Highly recommend! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: Vincent , Sapone , Ithaca ,NY March 27, 2008 Smoother and even more mellow than the Emperor's Red tea. I liked the Emperor Red a little better - the mellowness was punctuated with a bit of that Golden Monkey malty/cocoa kick. This tea is pleasant and mild - probably great for someone who is new to black (red) tea. It has a natural honey scent that is very nice. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: A tea Drinker, Castro Valley ,CA October 02, 2007 This tea has a very malty, honey-like, soft flavor. A 3min brew gives a strong, sweet aroma that can confuse it for a cup of real malt sugar, and no tannin whatsoever. The leaves are the tippiest I've seen so far, and I even love the unusual golden hairs. The horror stories of the last batch of GM kept me away from it, now I got a sample of it and also the Yunnan Gold Competition Grade, I'll update the review with comparison. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: A tea Drinker, Pittsburgh ,PA September 25, 2007 Lovely bag aroma and a lovely, complex tea. Very Golden Monkey-like, but in a slightly different direction: less cocoa but with a definite dark-chocolate finish when cool; perhaps a maltier opening but a softer finish. I'll have to try this head to head with some GM. I'm not convinced that the taste difference is worth the price difference, but then GM is just right for me; you may think differently! An excellent tea regardless. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: A tea Drinker, Durham ,NC June 27, 2007 Amazing looking and smelling tea just in the bag. Upon steeping, I'm getting a lot of the chocolaty/malty notes that I get from Golden Monkey. Just a nudge of tannin in the finish, even with a 3 minute steep. I got a sample of it, but in the future I'll stick with Golden Monkey. Otherwise a fine tea. ![]() |
