Personally I can't drink this tea. The very heavy smokey smell and taste irritated my sinuses ALOT. If you like a strong earthy taste you'll love this tea. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: A tea Drinker, Knoxville ,TN August 16, 2008 Having never tried a Lapsang before, I was taken aback at first by the smokiness of this tea. I brewed the first pot with a friend, and we couldn't stop talking about how different the tea is. It may be an acquired taste, but I definitely acquired it by the end of my first bag and will be buying more. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: A tea Drinker, pinnacle ,NC August 09, 2008 This is a very smokey smelling tea, as it should be. I was startled by the heaviness of the smoke upon opening the packet and every time I made a cup but when you drink it, very little of that smoke is detected. It is smooth and mellow and I feel it would make a better winter-time tea than a summer one. I added sugar and milk and enjoyed it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: A tea Drinker, Philadelphia, PA June 11, 2008 Outstanding! A manly tea if ever there was one! Anyone who rates this tea poorly because of the smokiness of the tea is completely missing the point. The description on the web site is "spot on" -- no surprises here -- this is a SMOKY tea, folks, as is ALL Lapsang Souchong. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: Cathy , Wright , Duluth ,MN May 31, 2008 I opened the back and thought I would lose my cookies. I am not a fan of smoky tea. Some peole are, and if so you will love the smell of old campfire clothing and beef jerky. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: Vanessa , McDonough , Homestead ,FL March 16, 2008 This is the first lapsang I tried, and I am not interested in trying any others. The smokiness was overwhelming and tasted like charred barbecue. The best comparison I can make is this: spend a night sitting downwind of a campfire so that every inch of your clothing, skin, hair etc has been permeated with the aroma of smoke. That smell is the exact flavor of this tea. I could only get down 1 sip, and then dumped the rest! I think lapsang is like puerh- either you like it or you don't. I definitely fall under the "Don't" category. Still, I'm glad I ordered the sampler so I could try it! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: A tea Drinker, Whitehouse,TX December 16, 2007 I tried this tea per a review from another site and I like it! It is smoky and different from oolong of which I am accustomed but I like it's change of pace! Very nice on a cold day. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: Joshua , Carter , Norfolk ,NE March 22, 2007 If you like like being around a campfire, this is your tea! The dry aroma smells like mesquite beef jerky. As soon as you add water, the pine really comes through. It's surprisingly mellow (i'm a coffee guy). I just fell in love with the pine aromatics of the brewed tea. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: Matthew , Rubino , Naugatuck ,CT December 03, 2006 Wow! I'm not really sure what to say about this one. I only got a half-sipful down of this tea, because I nearly passed out simply opening the pouch -- to say this tea is 'deeply aromatic' is more than a little misleading. Just the tea itself (before I even began infusion) was enough to stink up my apartment until the next morning. I might try it again once I've become more of a 'tea snob,' but I highly doubt it. Not for beginners. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: Nick , Young , Santa Ana ,CA June 05, 2006 It took about 18 tries, but I finally discovered a SpecialTea that I don't care for. This tea is relentless! At first brewing, I actually liked the fact that it smelled like pipe tobacco, I just wished that it didn't taste exactly like it as well. I imagine that this is what it would tast like if you brewed up a carton of Parliments -- or perhaps part of a gamey, ancient Egyptian mummy. The smokiness is soooo strong, it is completely overwhelming. The previous reviewers were correct that adding some honey does mellow it a bit -- enough to enjoy a maybe a half cupful. When I had my wife smell the aroma, she humorously commented "It smells like... the worst smell in the world." But who am I to judge? Get a sampler for yourself and try it out. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: A tea Drinker, Pittsburgh ,PA April 24, 2006 Zaz. This is like drinking smoke. Fine, full-bodied smoke, mind you. It's a bit overwhelming for my tastes -- I'll stick with the smoky Russian Caravan blend -- but if you're into the serious campfire taste, this might be just the thing. A bit of honey does indeed open it up some, but the little voice says why would you want to? For me, this is an extremist's tea and should be appreciated (or not) as such. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: JASON DAVID , GARLAND , ATHENS ,GA February 15, 2006 This one is heavy and goes great with a pipe of tobacco--very complementary flavors. Not an everyday tea by any means (at least not for me), but worth having around for when you want something deep and smokey (think BBQ pit smokey). With honey, it really opens up. You've got to mess with brewing a little. I like it a little under the suggested time to kind of pull the smokiness back a little bit. Tea is wonderful because it has such a wide latitude in flavor, and this one is out on the fringes--so it's worth trying just for the experience of it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: JENNIFER J , CONWAY , Philadelphia, PA February 04, 2006 I admit to being a thorough lap sou snob... fair warning. #830 is far too strong to my taste--overflavoured is perhaps the best way to describe this one. But then I don't drink too many lap sou's anymore because the balance I love--just a hint rather than a thwack of flavour--is elusive. The last time I had a fabulous one, I had to order it from Down Under (that shipping is a killer)... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: Carlo D'Ambrosi, Men of the world this tea is for you!!! If you thought tea was for danty women at tea time eating little sandwiches you're wrong! This is for those who feel they are never able to taste something that will send thier tastebuds running. If you smoke cigars or drink whiskey this tea will be great to have in your bottom draw. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: Robert Zabaga, Lapsang Souchong is a tea that will grow on you. I call it my 'thinking tea' and enjoy it while studying. Add a little honey and it's just perfect! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: Mr. Chumbley, The sweet tea leaves used for Lapsang Souchong Superior make a good balance against the robust smokiness. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: Lisa G., I don't know about the "like a single malt Scotch" in the description, but this tea is *wonderful*. A smokey flavored tea sounds weird, but it is very tasty...I love it with honey and a little cream. This is my all-time favorite! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: H.A.Sandberg, A fantasic winter tea. smoky and strong, but not at all over-powering. I found it particularly well-balanced with a slightly sweet taste and lingering finish. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewer: Archie, No. 830 Lapsang Souchong Superior is an excellent tea. If you are a Lapsang fan, you'll be impressed. Lapsang is my personal favorite, and it was only after ordering the "830" that I realized there is a difference in the same types of teas. ![]() |
